will this be the year that attitudes change?

A grim year. 

Perhaps many people, but I doubt we'll see much in the way of fundamental change..  nothing like the mobilization for WWII, which is probably the right scale.  The denial community has moved to shifting blame to private citizens, when large scale action must come from above.  It buys them time.  They're also preaching "wait for tech, that'll fix it"  We have enough tech now.  "Better" tech in ten or twenty or never years is exactly the wrong path.

Ed Yong wrote a terrific piece on ME/CFS - the awful form of long covid that's happening to some people.  It's in The Atlantic and unfortunately is paywalled.  Someone sent a copy to me and it's both terrific and frightening.  Read it if you subscribe  Ed posted a summary as a series of tweets.  I don't use Twitter either, but a collection of the tweets is here. 

Remember that exercising a bit of caution - keeping your vaccinations up and wearing a mask indoors - not only help protect you, but others from this hell.

The National Socialist Network joined Twitter in November 2022, shortly after Musk completed his deal to buy Twitter. On November 12, they tweeted: “Elon Musk is a true homie #ElonIsDestroyingTwitter.” Their account has been “verified since July 2023.” Musk has said that verified accounts are eligible to receive a share of ad revenue, meaning that advertisers could be helping to fill the coffers of a neo-Nazi organization.

The group has used its account to celebrate Hitler (“the greatest man to ever live!”) and has posted the swastika. It also attempts to recruit followers on the platform, including by writing: “So long as the Jews push for their Voice to Parliament, all White men of good conscience must fight against it. We implore all White Australians of our ideals to join the revolution!”

Twitter has monetized the neo-Nazi account and has placed numerous ads on it. Media Matters found ads this week on the National Socialist Network's account for the following brands:

troubling to say the least.  An important read.

Another worry.  Are women of reproductive ages and their daughters safe in a Tesla?  Musk is extremely right-wing and against abortion.  Teslas keep track of where you go and send it to the mothership.  It would be very easy to compile a list of Teslas that happened to visit the neighborhood of an abortion clinic, match it against contact information and turn it over to rightwing state governments and/or anti-abortion activities.  The activits operate in all 50 states and just love outing and harassing.    It's probably not happening now, but it could easily be done in a day.

Part of owning a Tesla these days is how much do you trust the CEO...
