Going through the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory site at the USGS one find this bit on the November 29th, 1959 eruption of Kilauea Iki.. check out the photo:)

Lava fountain blasts pumice 425 m above the vent during the 3rd episode. Pieces of spatter as large as 60 cm in diameter rained down on the road and shattered the wooden guardrail. Other pieces punched shallow depressions in the asphalt surface. On the leeward side of the growing cone, the Crater Rim road was covered by 6 m of pumice in the late evening of November 28; 11 hours later, the pumice was as deep as 25 m!
