A student car from the Delft University of Technology went from 0-100 kmh in 2.15 seconds and now holds the world record for electric vehicle acceleration to the speed. (100kph is 62 mph). This turns out to be faster than the fastest production car in the world (an Ariel Atom)
horsepower per pound is a common metric for cars.. here the car is so light (320 pounds) that the driver adds a significant amount - the number refers to the weight without driver.
Electric motors have impressive torque at low speeds and can offer great acceleration. There is an issue with battery power (how quickly energy can be transferred from battery to motor) as well as the low energy density of the battery, but for short distances electrics can be very impressive.
