Dual Polarization Doppler Radar promises more accuate weather reporting - particlarly on very localized types and amounts of precipitation. The National Weather Service is well into upgrading the doppler radar system to this technology, but there is still the need for a deeper understanding of the data to aid forecasting.
The University of Oklahoma is crowdsourcing calibration with a free iPhone app called mPing. I've used it - easy to use whenever you are watching precipatition and potentially very useful.
