It might be more accurate technically, but the image of the sport is tightly bound to beach.
It does make sense as there is no real professional indoor volleyball in the US. The two sports place very different demands on the athletes and I think the beach flavor demands more versatility and sand is probably easier on the body with time than wood (you find competitive beach volleyballers in their forties while professional indoor volleyball in Europe is a young person's game with many injuries).
If this takes off a lot of schools are going to need good sand,
