bikes and freeways

Maybe when gas hits $10 a gallon there will be few enough cars on the road that bikes will be more practical.

That bicycle ride took place (5:30 p.m.) when average vehicle speed was probably around 10 mph or less. If average speeds had been 30 or 45 or 60 or 75, you wouldn't dare be on those roadways. Cycle traffic on such roads would be totally impractical unless special lanes were specifically blocked off for bicycles. Most states don't allow bicycles on controlled access roads.
