More Earth Day commentary .. human powered transport may correlate with a healthier population. (pdf)
This turns out to be something that can be done at a very local level. More than a few communities are human friendly and many others are within the reach of a few people becoming active.
At the low end walking is easy. I've been walking a minimum of five miles a day for a bit over a year (I think I missed about 10 days in the last year due to very bad weather). Much of our grocery shopping is done as part of the walks (we are only 1.7 miles from a store). The only hints are shoes that fit well, sun tan lotion where appropriate, water when it is hot, and layered clothing when it is cold. An iPod is also extremely useful - most of my "radio" listening is time shifted to the device. On the positive side I would claim that my general health has improved (sample of one . your mileage may vary)
