What is meant by programming down to the iron?

Thanks Jheri. Machine language are instructions that execute directly by the computer's processor unit. It's numeric and is machine dependent. If you program well it can be very fast, but it's difficult to use. Almost all programs are written in higher level languages that are much more readable and have tools to aid the programmer. Thhis source code is then turned into the machine language instructions by other programs (compilers, assemblers,..)

The early days of computing were mostly machine code - a collection of machine language instructions that formed the program.

And iron .. in the 50s and early 60s computers were often called big iron or just iron. A physical manifestation.
