april fools email

I received this last night from a friend in Europe (name of a very famous Chinese scientist is redacted)

Prof ********* at Fudan University reports China will place four metric tons of sulphur into the stratosphere at 20,000 meters to study albedo enhancement. Atmospheric carbon dioxide mitigation may be possible with 10^7 to 10^8 metric tons, which could economically be delivery by specialized artillery canons or rail guns.

Designed to give heart attacks. This sort of mitigation might work, it probably has really bad side effects and it is potentially cheap enough that a country like China could do it on their own. chilling to think about ... The rail gun was a nice touch

sorting out the history of tech

noted by Diane:

After having dug to a depth of 10 meters last year, Scottish scientists
found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the
conclusion that their ancestors had a telephone network more than 100
years ago.

Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed, English
scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters, and shortly after, headlines in
the English newspapers read: ‘English archaeologists have found
traces of 200 year old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors
already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred
years earlier than the Scots.’

One week later, ‘The Kerrymen,’ a southwest Irish newsletter,
reported the following: ‘After digging as deep as 30 meters in peat bog near
Tralee, Paddy O’Droll, a self taught archaeologist, reported that he
found absolutely nothing. Paddy has therefore concluded that 300 years
ago Ireland had already gone wireless.’

the forgetfulness mystery

The amount of forgetfulness seen in the Bush Administration is stunning. It seems uncharitable to suggest that these people are basically dishonest - after all - President Bush called them the best and the brightest and "best" would seem to imply honest.

I humbly suggest the problem is lead paint.

Republicans fought environmental lead restrictions tooth and nail when they were first proposed and some continue to fight lead paint removal in low income areas. When Bush came to the White House a massive redecoration took place (this happens with most administrations) and perhaps the Republican love of the product was sufficient to have it specified for the re-painting.

How else can one explain sudden forgetfulness among so many bright and honest personal?

popper and falsification

Popper_1I was listening to a piece on Karl Popper on today's chilly lunch hour walk.

Any student of the philosophy of science knows Karl Popper well - his "theory of falsification" is of central importance (and an excellent way to find pseudoscience like ID)

The more we learn about the world and the deeper our learning, the more conscious, specific and articulate will be our knowledge of what we do not know, our knowledge of our ignorance.

I've read Popper and commentaries on his work as it applies to science, but was not familiar with the backstory (beyond his interaction with the "Vienna Circle") and his influence on politics.

The show is a good background to how Popper impacted the philosophy of science and politics - and how he is seen today.

Highly recommended - the In Our Time podcast form the BBC (find on iTMS)

the α-β-γ paper

The Alpher-Bethe-Gamow paper is the one of those celebrated physics papers where most physicists can recall all of the authors (or at least close enough).

An early big bang paper by Ralph Alpher and George Gamow ... Gamow knew Hans Bethe needed to be added:-)

The wikipedia article has some fine comments and mostly confirms the stories I've heard over the years...

The results of these calculations were first announced in a letter to The Physical Review, April 1, 1948. This was signed Alpher, Bethe, and Gamow, and is often referred to as the 'alphabetical article.' It seemed unfair to the Greek alphabet to have the article signed by Alpher and Gamow only, and so the name of Dr. Hans A. Bethe (in absentia) was inserted in preparing the manuscript for print. Dr. Bethe, who received a copy of the manuscript, did not object, and, as a matter of fact, was quite helpful in subsequent discussions. There was, however, a rumor that later, when the alpha, beta, gamma theory went temporarily on the rocks, Dr. Bethe seriously considered changing his name to Zacharias.

The close fit of the calculated curve and the observed abundances is shown in Fig. 15, which represents the results of later calculations carried out on the electronic computer of the National Bureau of Standards by Ralph Alpher and R. C. Herman (who stubbornly refuses to change his name to Delter.)

global warming and obesity

Bjarne points out this beautiful note in New Scientist:

Climate change and rising obesity are pressing issues of global concern. Simple calculations, outlined here using data for the US as an example, show that the latter may partially mitigate the former.

Emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the US from burning fossil fuels rose from 1415 million tonnes in 1994 to 1582 MT in 2002. Over the same period the mean body mass index of US adults (aged 20 years and over) rose from 26.5 to 28.1 for women and 26.7 to 27.8 for men.

These BMI increases reflect additional fat deposits of 3.3 kg and 2.3 kg (7.3 and 5.1 lbs) respectively per person. At a population level, these increases along with adult population growth (from 187.7 million to 206.6 million) amount to an additional 1.03 million tonnes of fat on the collective adult American skeleton.

Human fat is approximately 76% carbon by mass so, over the period considered (which includes the period of negotiation and signature of the Kyoto treaty) US citizens sequestered the equivalent of 2.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide about their person.

Development of techniques to capture carbon dioxide is favoured in some quarters over imposition of emission restrictions that may be economically burdensome. Human sequestration could be one minor contribution: if in 2002 US adults had burnt off sufficient fat (2.2 MT) to reach the midpoint of the 'normal' BMI range (18.5 to 24.9) this would have released the equivalent of 6.1 MT of CO2.

Although this is a small amount compared to the country's total emission that year (0.4%), it is larger relative to domestic emissions. It is of the order of the amount forecast to be saved from the domestic sector in the UK by uptake of windpower microgeneration (0.3%).

One way to look at last night's election is that the implicit gerrymandering of the Senate and the in-the-tank-ness of the press corps are keeping people from realizing how big the blowout was. Consider this: it looks like 32,100 thousand Americans voted for Democratic Senatorial candidates, and only 24,524 thousand Americans voted for Republican Senatorial candidates. That's a 13.4% margin of Democratic victory.

Speaker Hastert Claims He Was Molested By Bill Clinton

Washington, D.C. - In a very strange development, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is now saying that several years ago he was molested by then President Bill Clinton and that post traumatic stress disorder from that event is the reason he reacted so slowly in dealing with the Mark Foley scandal. Hastert further stated that he believes that the entire Republican leadership as well as Representative Mark Foley were also molested by Bill Clinton which he says explains why the episode with the congressional pages happened in the first place.

Said Hastert, "At first, I repressed the abuse I suffered from Bill Clinton. Then, in the last day or so, it came back to me all at once. My therapist called it memory recovery and said it is common when someone is subconsciously hiding something that traumatized them a long time ago. As I thought about it more and more over the last 24 hours I realized that this whole matter of Representative Foley's sexual misconduct and the lack of response by the Republican leadership is actually a Democratic scandal that is Bill Clinton's fault. If Bill Clinton hadn't molested me, Mark Foley and the entire Republican leadership none of this would have happened."

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has contacted former independent counsel Ken Starr and instructed him to reopen his investigation of Bill Clinton in order to pave the way for the prosecution of the former president.

and even better:-)

Pages Declared Enemy Combatants & Sent To Guantanamo

Washington, D.C. - In a last ditch effort to save the Republican Party from losing one or both houses of Congress, President Bush today signed an executive order declaring that all congressional pages who had contact with Representative Mark Foley were operating against the welfare of the United States and are therefore to be designated as Enemy Combatants. Shortly after this declaration was released, agents from the Department of Homeland Security detained all pages who fit this description and transferred them to Guantanamo for interrogation.

Weighing in on this controversy several hours later, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said, "Now that this issue involving inappropriate conduct between the pages and the Republican leadership has become a matter of national security, all documents, memos and e-mails are hereby classified as top secret and will not be available to the public or investigators. I am also instructing the Speaker of the House that it is in the best interests of the country that there be no more comments from him or any other Republican members of Congress on this issue. As far as we are concerned, we have removed the threat these pages presented to the security of America and now the matter is closed."

Following the President's declaration and the statement from the Attorney General, Fox News ran a special program featuring Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Ann Coulter. The program was called Satan's Pages Defeated By God's President, A True Story and it highlighted the heroic attempts by the Bush administration to keep the country safe from the renegade congressional pages who flouted their sexuality in an attempt to subvert the safety of the American people by disrupting the work of Congress. The program included several new songs by Lee Greenwood and Toby Keith.

In an unrelated development, Karl Rove was seen talking with representatives of the Diebold Corporation.
