the full version  As right-wing as the US is, even among the far right there doesn't seem to be a lot of support for pure greed and the "screw the worker" attitude that exists in many parts of Wall Street.  So when a non-worker friendly Repubulican senses he can go after after a corporate evil guy, you suspect there is something going on.

who is taking the photos?

Tourists or locals?  A neat bit of work from Eric Fischer.  There is some noise in the information, but a neat idea.

Some people interpreted the Geotaggers' World Atlas maps to be maps of tourism. This set is an attempt to figure out if that is really true. Some cities (for example Las Vegas and Venice) do seem to be photographed almost entirely by tourists. Others seem to have many pictures taken in piaces that tourists don't visit.

Blue points on the map are pictures taken by locals (people who have taken pictures in this city dated over a range of a month or more).

Red points are pictures taken by tourists (people who seem to be a local of a different city and who took pictures in this city for less than a month).

Yellow points are pictures where it can't be determined whether or not the photographer was a tourist (because they haven't taken pictures anywhere for over a month). They are probably tourists but might just not post many pictures at all.

The maps are ordered by the number of pictures taken by locals.

The NY Times notes a Pew Research survey that finds an increasing trend  in the perception of class  tension. Of course it is pooh-poohed by the ultra conservative Heritage Foundation.  The resonance the 99% movement found may be an interesting indicator and something that might impact politics.  Romney may turn out to be a less than optimal choice for the Republicans.

subtle influences on how we eat

Brian Wansink is a Cornell researcher who does fantastic work on eating behavior (from food shopping to eating at restaurants, schools and homes).  I recommend his book Mindless Eating for some surprises on how people respond to subtle cues.

He has a project aimed at school lunches that can be very cost effective. 

I found a nice introduction to his work in an audio interview at Yale.  Short, but in two parts - the second focusing on children's lunches in schools:

Romney was more compassionate with his family and pets than the workers of companies Bain "helped"..  He is a representative of the top of the 1% - it will be intereseting to see if that important piece of the Republican Party can be squared with the other parts this cycle...
