STEM carrers, particularly at the professional research level where a Ph.D. is a minimal requirement, tend to be heavily male domainated. (many of the physical sciences, math and mechanical engineering are in the single digits in the US). A variety of groups have been trying to encourage girls to develop an interest in science (some would say not to lose it when they are 10 to 12). The EU has a commission that deals with this and they've released a video intended to change the hearts and minds of girls.
Many - particularly women who do science - see it as clueless fluff that may even be counterproductive. The reaction has been to create alternative videos. One of the best is from Dartmouth - a bit of the real world.. a world with real adventure
(hat tip to Andy)
