peak forecasting?

Weather satellites and forecasting models are important components of our national infrastructure.  It turns out the all-important satellite component is in trouble.  Will be be at a point in the near future when forecasts become significantly worse and will that situation last for a decade or more?

We have a tendancy to build shiny new things, but not keep them up or worry about the cost of replacement...
