There seems to be a general agreement the new Kindle paperwhite is the best ereader going with substantial progress being made over earlier Kindles. So for those who want a decicated ereader, this may be what you are looking for. Of course the Amazon bookstore may be the closest thing there is to a monopoly these days, but details... details ....
You can see more here - the wifi version is $139 and probably all you need if you have wifi. If you want "free" network access anywhere in the US go for the $179 version. I have no idea how obtrusive the ads are on the base version..
I'm pretty happy with my iPad as an ebook as well as a general purpose device .. I question the Amazon Fire, but it may do well in its updated version and has the potential to be the winning version of Android for tablets (much to Googles chagrin, but such is the nature of open source and forks)
