US CO2 emissions have fallen to 1992 levels - the reason largely stems from the economic move from coal to natural gas and was partly aided by a decrease in gasoline demand through less driving and a very mild Winter. Natural gas still produces far to much carbon dioxide and we need to transition from it to something cleaner as soon as possible, but getting away from coal is a very good thing.
Coal emissions, now 387 million metric tonnes per year, are at their lowest level since 1983. The vast majority of that comes from the production of electricity where the largest move from coal to (mostly) natural gas has taken place mostly for economic reasons.
