high frequency trading

Computer trading where trades are made in milliseconds and stocks are rarely held for a second - they are becoming dominant and (to me) don't make any sense - just some traders making money on the sides at the expense of everyone else.  Here is an animation showing the rise of the activity - unfortunately the scale of the y axis is not shown.
