Xtracycle has a quick release sidecar assembly for their cargo bikes. Carry up to 200 pounds when you need to. It looks pretty slick and doesn't seem terribly expensive.
Cargo bikes are mostly for carrying stuff rather than communiting or recreation. They have a definite place in the lifestyles of some. Quite popular in Northern Europe.
