One of the articles I pointed to in The Lancet last week measured physical activity in 119 counries. Thresholds of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week or vigorous exercise for 20 minutes three times a week were used as defintions for "active" in the US 40.5% of the adult population is inactive by this measure (33.5% of the men and 47.4% of the women).
For developed countries Greece and the Netherlands are the most active and Malta, the UK and Japan the least.
The study has a lot of flaws, but it attempts to make the best of exsting information... I was surprised by some of the rankings...
