Over the years people have tried to make vehicles that are somewhere between a car and a bike. The most successful are found in Northern Europe (mostly Holland) and are two or three wheeled platforms with aerodynamic farings that drop the energy requirements at crusing speed enough to counter the added weight and offer higher speeds and extended range. Neat as these velomobiles are, they are still very rare with only a few thousand worldwide.
Vehicles that are more car-like are even rarer. Here is one that can use a combination of pedaling and an electric motor. Very little information on it - I would imagine it might work out in some areas, but even if it is veyr good getting people out of cars into something like this is a long shot in the US.
