Blimps and airships don't make much sense for transporting people and goods - the frontal area kills efficiency. But if you want to loiter for a long time it is hard to beat them. The Army will soon be testing a surveillance platform called the LEMV (Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle) in New Jersey.
It can fly with or without a crew and can stay airborne for as much as three weeks at a time.
