The separation of church and state and has given churches tax exemptions (pdf) - that turns out to be spendy for tax payers. It is interesting that few churches, using reasonably sensible metrics, would manage to qualify as charitable organizations on their own.
As a tax payer are you getting your money's worth?

Times are a changing?
I suppose one could be living in one of these countries where "Members of churches must pay church taxes." In some of those countries if you are a citizen of that country you are automatically a member of the state church and you automatically pay church taxes. When I was living in Germany, I noticed that part of a worker's taxes were sent to the Vatican.
