Dogs evolved to run; if they are not fed, then they must run to scavenge for food or chase it down to survive. If that dog was stray as claimed, then it would have been running for weeks or months to obtain food in order to survive. When initially given food by the cycle team, that dog then saw no reason not to stay with the team as a potential future source of more food and a means to survive, which apparently is what happened.
If that stray dog had been fed regularly by someone before encountering the cycling team, it would not have had to run significant distances to find food, and it is likely that it would not and could not have kept pace with the cycling team, the reason being that its muscles and footpads would not have been sufficiently conditioned for such exertion, especially on hot, rough pavement.
My wife's relatives have a dog that they keep penned up in a small yard. When they bring their dog to our farm, it goes wild and runs full bore for an hour or two until practically exhausted. And much of that running, it seems, is up and down our rocked lane. And then the dog goes limping for hours because its footpads are raw. Dumb dog.
