I'm going to recommend a premium gelato for maintaining your weight ..
strap in and stay with me - I haven't lost my mind...
There is a lot of evidence that most people gain back weight they have lost dieting - usually within a year. In fact only a very small percentage of dieters manage not to end up at a weight greater than their starting point two years out. Reasons for this are still being discovered, but a basic interpretation seems to be once the body has been heavy there are mechanisms that slightly increase the efficiency of the body effectively lowering the metabolism a bit - usually about 100 to 200 Calories in people of normal weight. Hunger signals don't change - or are even increased - and a weight gain is inevitable.
I've taken a fairly careful look at what I eat and burn through metabolism and exercise and feel the difference is between 150 and 190 Calories a day in my case. This suggests that if I were to eat without careful monitoring and a bit of discipline I would gain at least 15 pounds a year.
For nearly five months I've been in what amounts to a maintenance mode (for details on the diet/exercise routine I used check this link). My experience so far has been that keeping to a new lower level is more difficult than dieting was. I'm almost certain I would fail without the monitoring.
I've also found that a few treats and good food in general are important. The trick with the treats is to go for quality rather than quantity. Don't worry too much about the price - just make sure a small amount every once and awhile makes sense.
I can justify about 4 or 5 ounces of a really good ice cream or gelato every few days (I alternate with other treats). Currently I've been loving Talenti Gelato. The flavors are wonderful as is the mouthfeel and they use premium ingredients and only what is absolutely necessary.
You might do better with freshly made gelato from a great store, but Talenti is better than what you will be served in most restaurants and many small gelato shops. I certainly haven't seen better in stores and I've never had better homemade gelato.
They keep it fresh in a container with an air tight screw top that is useful for storing small things after you have finished the gelato.
Highly recommended and certainly worth the price!
Treats like this are necessary component of my long term weight maintenance program. Just stay wtih the finest foods, know your limits and where you are, and don't overdo it... cake..
er ... that can be good too and may work for you, but I'll stick with gelato and a few other things like great chocolate.
You made me want an ice cream! Oh no ...
