Today someone wrote about Samsø in Denmark and their success with energy independence.  

This is not a new story, but one worth looking at.  The New Yorker had a feature last year.  There are many learnings.  Location is really important - you need to take advantage of what you have (a lot of wind and straw in this case).  The social issues can easily be more important than technical issues.  And efficiency and conservation are very important (this is lost on most Americans)

It is a nice, if somewhat imperfect, model.   But lots of imperfect added up may be much better than what we currently have.
