Several readers have written asking about Helen and Mary and the story about how an athlete's visit to Wipeout may have made a difference.
An email arrived today.
Hello
I don't follow your blog on a daily basis but was so happy to see my comment specially mentioned. Mary loved watching Colleen and we went to the ABC TV website and she watched it over and over. She would yell "Go Colleen!" when Colleen was pulling herself out of the mud even though she had seen it several times.
We gently suggested that maybe Mary should try some physical activity with other kids who have problems. Last Spring we had tried to get her involved in the Special Olympics without any luck, but now she agreed to it and we filled out the registration materials. There are a group of local people who coach these kids and we will be meeting with one of them maybe this weekend.
Mary has problems doing things most kids find easy and she lives with this frustration and often falls into depression. She is excited now. I don't know how long it will last, but she is looking forward to meeting the person who will coach her. These people do great work. If I can ask you to cross your fingers.
If you see Colleen, please give her a big hug from us.
sincerely,
Helen
