electro-bike conversion kit

Turn your bike into something with electric assist and back to a normal bike in about a minute. These guys are evaluating the market.

I suspect high gas prices will generate a stream of designs (this one looks interesting), but we'll be lucky to get much above the current 0.4 percent bike commuting rate in the US for trips under 5 miles.

Why have a conversion kit when you can have hybrids with which you can bike with/without an integrated assist. I attached a link of all the types of hybrid bikes available in Holland (sorry, it is a dutch site, but the pictures should speak for itself). Some are electrical assisted bikes, others use a small combustion engine. They are becoming fairly common over here.
