Phil vents at Bad Astronomy
This is very frightening stuff and consistent with what I'm hearing from others in the community. To first order the attackers don't appreciate the difference between science and technology and, to second order, they have real axes to grind (short term business costs and religion) with real science.
The scientifically clueless have even been comparing their cause to that of Galileo -- something of a stretch and a rewrite of history.
The potential damage done by these literal christians - the untelligentsia - is remarkable in its scale and has everything to do with the long term competitive position of the country. Of course they may choose to ignore the mere facts of the country going into decline as they ignore the mere facts of science.

It is past time for the scientific community to speak out.
Jim Hansen on On Point ... oh yeah .. Jim is a well respected Ph.D. and irector of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies ... not a BS in journalism from from Texas A&M like one of the major Bush foot soldiers who are trying to control discourse.
My favorite Republican creationist loon is Carl Baugh. http://www.creationevidence.org/
One of the humorous things about him is his wrapping himself in "degrees" The talk.origins archive has something to say about that http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/paluxy/degrees.html
It is a different thought, but i was wondering how long it will be before you can't post blasphemous images of the Prophet Dick Cheney?
