a nickel a mile ...

My old walking shoes are ready to be replaced. Checking the walking log, they have about 1000 miles on them (I walk quite a bit in my free time for recreation, thinking and listening to music/podcasts). They cost about $50, so there is five cents a mile of wear.

Of course walking has other benefits, but I was surprised to see the expense that high.

A really curious comparison is with rubber for our Audi TT. The Summer tires are reasonably soft and last about 20,000 miles (although some people drive aggressively enough that 10,000 is rare). A new set of four is about $1000 --- a nickel a mile.

I run every day and get about 300 miles from my $80 shoes. - almost 27 cents a mile. I also have lots of pain and occasional injuries, but I keep running anyway.

an added note ... Jim says his bike tires (serious bike rider) run about 3.3 cents a mile
